Helladic tumulus

Coming from Levidi in the South, just before reaching the turnoff to Orchomenos, you can see a mound in the fields on the left, some 200 m from the road.

It is an Early or Middle Helladic tumulus of the third millenium BC with a diameter of 12 m and a height of 2.5 m. According to the finds it was used for burials, although this was not always the case with other tumuli of that period.

The tumulus is a mound made up of irregular stones, and I assume that the conspicuous incisions are excavation trenches. Unfortunately, details of the excavations are difficult to find.

The site is fenced and locked, but somebody had made me the pleasure to open the fence and in that way I had the chance to take a closer look.
